This sculpture explores the Ismaili concept of Zāhir (outer, material) and Bāṭin (inner, spiritual). Two plaster-clay cube halves represent the visible world and enclose a central gold-leafed clay sphere symbolising the hidden, spiritual realm and the Ismaili community. The cube’s outer faces are engraved with Kufic Arabic calligraphy naming the 50 Ismaili Imams, forming a sacred boundary. Referencing global traditions and timeless materials, the work honours cross-cultural heritage and craftsmanship, inviting reflection on the sacred, the seen and unseen, and shared humanity. The sculpture’s form and materiality, with the Kufic calligraphy, echo Muslim architecture, especially Fatimid architecture.
